Two Fabulous Weekenders

Kincraig Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Trial Bin 576 South Australia Cabernedro 2013/2016

How do you tell which wine is better? Well the test is hard as I am not sure. The Limestone Coast Cabernet is the known quantity whereas the other combines a South Australian Cabernet with the amazing Barossa Valley variety, Bonvedro from a younger vintage. Almost the same score yet $2 apart in price.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Time and again we find winners in the Great South East which encompasses Coonawarra, Padthaway and numerous other great regions. You can taste this as you already know Coonawarra. It is juicy and similar. The know quantity.

Cabernedro 2013/2016

Experiments pay off and the best are bottled in tiny amounts of which this is another. A blend of two varieties Cabernet and Bonvedro. Exciting wine, tempting, offers a difference, but check the score and price.

Points scores give an opinion of the quality. The price what you pay. But how do you reconcile the two. Is it simple or baffling?

Glug wines are graded in quality by the prices. There are exceptions as we often discover great wines that are way below market prices and these are offered on a first come first served basis. In general though you get what you pay for.

I have frequently noted that as the price climbs so does the difficulty of assessing the quality/price ratio. If you make a mistake and the wine did not cost much it’s a shrug of the shoulders but wondering what is in the glass if you have spent $50 may make you go, ouch!

Over the last week I have returned to the method which is commonly used by most other retailers of giving each wine a score out of 100. Recall that the scores which you see in newspapers and magazines are about quality and are not linked to the price you pay.
As an after thought commentators may remark that a wine with a high score is particularly low in price which is a quaint way of saying it may offer a buying opportunity.

By returning to scoring wines out of 100 I hope to make it easier for you to weigh up what we offer. You can combine the price with the quality score, balance both, and try to solve the riddle of how much more are the few extra points worth. Or find out where your-ouch!-point is.

Over the next few months I will introduce the scores of other professional judges to help you come to grips with this subjective and very personal scale; weighing up quality and price.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

'The Jackman’
Trial Bin
South Australia Dry Red Blend No 4 N.V.

This little fellow has moved up a division in the fighting stakes and while not a Barossan is beginning to push his weight around.

This is the fouth bottling and all are different as Benjamin fiddles. The base is a superb batch of Cabernet and then many additions. Rocketing to fame as a best seller.

P.B. Burgoyne
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

A fortunate purchase early last year has given us a Barossa Shiraz staple for over 12 months.

There is a bit left though we are fretting about where the next will come from.

Recall we did not make this wine but were lucky to be around when it came up for sale.

Telegraph Road
South Australia
Classic Dry Red 2013

Creating good reds at a budget price is a specialty of ours. The first Telegraph Road was the 2008 vintage and this still drinks well as the composition of the Telegraph is all about what quality is it possible to achieve for a price.

This is a great bargain and is limited to one case per order.

‘Tumbleweed’
South Australia Classic Dry Red 2013

I think this blend shows what incredible value can be delivered at an Ulta-value price. Nothing like this can be done unless its from a small winery where folk think daily about bargains.

South Australian All Red Selection Series No.2

I put together this mixed dozen to show that under $7 we have a range of hand made, individual reds which for many customers will be all they need. Wines come and go quickly at Glug as making huge amounts and smothering vintage differences is not our way.

The Big Red Mix No.17

This is our longest running mixed dozen because it is the most popular. It provides a balance between expensive varieties and our more general favourites plus provides a saving on buying the dozen bottles separately. A real Glug winner.
