Big Friday Bargains

I lead with an opening one day special on the new Andrina Shiraz which returns after 20 months absence. Benjamin and I just adore the fruit from Langhorne Creek. Next a superb special, this Friday being the first, on the wonderful Knotts Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. Then an alert on a new and improved bottling of a Trial Bin Carbonedro. These three fulfil our aim of providing advanced drinking at keen prices.

Trial Bin 576
South Australia
Cabernedro 2013/2016

Experiments pay off and the best when of exceptional interest are bottled in tiny amounts.

A blend of two varieties Cabernet and Bonvedro from different vintages with a few small additions-all for the better.

Exciting wine, tempting, offers a difference, so check the score and price.

Knotts
Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay 2017

The Knotts will rate highly as one of Benjamin’s great discoveries of 2018.

Impeccable breeding and I am thankful for the small quantity we were able to procure. Truth again that great things come in small amounts.

Andrina
Langhorne Creek
Shiraz 2016

I often introduce a new release with an opening special and the Andrina gives me extra pleasure because it is so damn good.

Oh! how we love the taste of Shiraz and Cabernet from Langhorne Creek. A gift to red drinkers.

Concentrate on what is in the glass, keep an open mind and let the wine talk to you. Oh! another thing - wine tasting notes are at best of minor help.

Three great specials for Friday and a few thoughts.

I get a stream of emails each day from a wide variety of industry drinks sites, which keep me up with innovations, new releases, and general news to do with alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.

Globally ‘drinks’ is big business though my special delight comes from reading how Pepsi, Schweppes, Coca-cola, and other giants attempt to handle the vast number of nimble footed, tiny businesses that are chewing away at their large feet.

The Californian company Health-Ade specialises in Kombucha and has released a new flavour; jalepeno, kiwi and cucumber which is, ‘when jalepenos ferment, their spiciness gives way to this awesome smokiness that pairs really well with the cooling cucumber while the kiwi brightens it.

Just one of hundreds of new releases each month. How do the giants possibly keep up with this?
Next a special mention for one of the spirit giants Diageo, owners of Johnnie Walker. They have just released the Mortlach 16 Year old Distillery Dram (a malt whisky) and were moved to write a tasting note, ‘opens with a sweet dry baking spice character that moves into a mid palate of overripe bananas and a rich butterscotch finish.

Goodness me, wine tasting notes are spreading everywhere and like those for wine are at best of minor help - perhaps referring to them as invented is the kindest term.

What is real is what is in the glass and what you pay and the three Friday specials I guarantee will deliver on both.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Wine Merchant Selections Which Save You Heaps

Goat Square
Barossa Valley
Grenache 2016

Such a lovely grape and surely the perfect luncheon red for a big red drinker. I talk about bargains from regions like Langhorne Creek because the region is not widely accepted. For a premium variety Grenache fits the same shoe. Its popularity will grow so enjoy them now when they are far cheaper.

Kitts Creek
Barossa Valley
Rose 2016

I have not been too impressed for many decades at what passes for Rose in Australia. It has always been an after thought, coloured white wine with lots of sugar, and a taste that tires after one sip. This is the real deal with grapes grown to make rose.

Cameron Country
'Red Post'
Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Coonawarra should be part of your drinking pattern. Barossa may be the foundation but interest is retained with the power of cooler climate maritime Cabernet of a type made so famous by Coonawarra. I see fabulous value for money.

Exploring the Full Favoured Reds of South Australia No.1

The reds of South Australia are very special. The reason is the geography of the premium vineyard regions means the climate is a balance between cooling and ripening in a way which is not found anywhere else on the globe. The bunches of grapes are pulled towards the coolness of the Great Southern Mega Ocean which slows flavour development, which can alter quickly by the intense, inland, heat flowing in from the baking, red centre.

It is this balance, constantly tilting, which makes complex, intense, interesting flavours which are best referred to as warm flavoured reds. Though a grower in Coonawarra may well disagree. Any-way this is the first mix of a wonderful new selection.

It's All Barossa Valley - 100% Guaranteed No.4

The Australian press, tourist agencies and P.R. companies all agree that the most popular wine region, the most recognised, is the Barossa Valley. The late, great Chef Joel Rubuchon was famous for his mashed potatoes which contained 25% butter. ‘No one who tasted his recipe, made with 25 per cent butter, could forget the experience’. This reads like a proxy for the Barossa Valley, not just a warm climate red but one exploding with 25% more flavour.
