High Country Flavours with Less Palate Weight
Ariadne Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2013
Region:Adelaide Hills, SA
For many years I have been wary about cool climate reds and say straight out that I tend to favour warm climate flavours. With that said I am very aware of the red wine flavours from high country places like the Canberra district. Over the last two years I have made four trips to Beechworth exploring the Victorian high country and for example recently attended a tasting at the Castagna winery in the Beechworth district.
Closer to home the winemaker Benjamin and I have watched with interest the high ratings and awards being given to many Adelaide Hills reds and particularly the recent applause for a Shaw and Smith Shiraz. Thus when offered a few barrels of Adelaide Hills on one of his numerous trips to McLaren Vale he knew the time was right to make the purchase.
Recall these high altitude wines seem to display less weight, sweetness and extract on the palate than those from a warm climate but may have the same alcohol content. Please keep your eye on the alcohol number as you do not want green, weedy characters being displayed and this Ariadne of course has none.
