Stockwell Creek 'Basket Pressed' Barossa Valley Mataro 2012
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
In the long years I spent behind a shop counter packing customer purchases the number of times I wrapped up a wine which was 100% mataro was close to zero. To be honest not one brand comes to mind. So what was going on? I was an adventurous and daring retailer but Australian wines made from mataro and for that matter grenache were rare. Yet a country which has some of the oldest plantings in the world, with many ancient clones, thought so little of them that they were rated as junk at harvest time.
Times change and at last a privileged few can now taste a great wine such as this Stockwell as Barossa mataro becomes part of a general awakening. The Australian red wine revival began in the 1950s and mataro was finally swept along in the 1980s though knowing exactly what to do with this wondrous variety is even more recent.
