Best Value from South Australia
P.B. Burgoyne Padthaway Shiraz 2014
Region: Padthaway, SA
For decades some of the best value wines in South Australia have come from Padthaway. The reasons are: the climate is a warmer version of Coonawarra; the grapes have an even ripeness meaning the quality is high while production costs are medium to low.
With numerous other regions now competing for attention the prices for high quality grapes has not moved for a decade. This spells bargain and for many years Padthaway has been a favourite hunting region of mine for high quality at low prices. Years back he big groups such as Lindemans, Hardys and Seppelts all sold Padthaway branded wines but it all got too hard developing customer awareness for the region meaning large tonnages now hit the open market.
This is the fourth Burgoyne wine we have discovered from this region and like the others delivers full rich flavours for a modest price. I recall a popular wine from the late 1990s - Browns of Padthaway - which sold for $10.99 to $11.99 which shows what has happened to prices.
