Greatness from the Cooler South East
P.B. Burgoyne Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Wrattonbully is a large region on a limestone plateau to the north-east of Coonawarra. It has a similar climate and for all intents and purposes identical soils. Plantings go back to 1975 and the pioneer was Koppamurra. The boom came in the 1990s when large companies began to fight over the precious fruit of Coonawarra and the word went out to find similar areas as Coonawarra was largely planted and land prices were very high. Companies such as Yalumba and Mildara established vineyards and were followed by many local farmers and the usual speculators.
The quality delivers what the early hopes had suggested but alerting customers to the wines of this region is another job entirely. It is likely a battle which is too hard meaning most of the fruit is used in giant company blends to lift the quality with no mention of the district. I believe upon tasting you will agree that many wines are way over-priced. We will continue to look in unfashionable regions on your behalf.
