Ripe Taste and Explosive Flavours
Hope Farm McLaren Vale Grenache 2013
Region: McLaren Vale, SA
I have tasted many Australian Grenache's over many decades. Some regions are now homing in on the definitive style. A variety such as this is at its best in warm to hot climates and we should not be surprised as the 'type location' is in the southern Rhone Valley. Australians have a "can do" spirit which means we try anything anywhere but taking this variety to cooler regions has not worked and may have given consumers the idea that the variety is thin and green. It is hard enough to get colour and flavour in the McLaren Vale and the Barossa without going south.
Glug are big supporters of this variety and it was likely planted as far back as the 1830s but, until the 1960s, was simply a large tonnage fortified variety which delivered good sugar levels, just perfect for cream sherry. We are now seeing profoundly complex wines emerging from McLaren Vale and they offer a big addition to the drinking choice of the advanced consumer.
