What A Bargain
Out it Goes

Trial Bin 508 South Australia Dry Red 2012
We had a busy 2016 making a great number of blends in our attempt to make a South Australian version of the famed reds of the Rhone Valley of France.

The great sweep of vineyard country from the Southern Flinders Ranges that finishes on Kangaroo Island is as exciting as any large region on the Globe and may well be the best of the lot of them.

Great wines have been produced since the famous red wine trials of the great genius Max Schubert showed us the way in the 1950s. We are attempting to make a full bodied red with fruit and warmth which is sensitive to price.

To do this we must be able to buy what we like from a large region so the wines we finally release will contain several to many varieties.

Please follow our progress over the months ahead.

I see good buying this 20th Weekend of 2017.

This the 20th Weekend of 2017 brings out one of Glugs greatest ever specials. The winemaker Benjamin is about to start another round of experiments so I clear the last of the Trial Red Bin 508. It is the only one left with any quantity so it is the last, finito, yours for $39.90. Recall it is dry land Shiraz and Grenache and will meet with your approval.

Also two wonderful specials finish this weekend. The P B Burgoyne Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015 is the best Barossa Valley red offer since 2012 so please grab a case at $95.

The price of Barossa Shiraz is very strong at this time so put this down to good fortune. I have often remarked that a business like Glug has to be located amongst the vineyards so you hear the gossip. No way would a buyer in Sydney have picked up this whisper. A sensational wine at a great price which happened to come our way.
Also this 20th Weekend is the end of the new released Telegraph Road South Australia Classic Dry Red 2013. Exceptional buying for $59.88.

Please enjoy the 20th Weekend Specials.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

P. B. Burgoyne
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

I have to go back to 2012 to find the last time we sold a Barossa Valley Shiraz of this quality at this price. Indeed this Burgoyne is all we like and look for in a wine.

The origin is the most sought after region in Australia-the Barossa Valley, the grapes were grown by well known farmers, the wine maker Benjamin Parker prepared the wine for bottling which is a critical job and we supervised the bottling locally. The wine was not made by us but on the bench against comparable samples this wine stood out as a grade above the others the and as you do we pulled the sample forward.

The transaction was done and here it is released under the wine-merchant label of P B Burgoyne. Burgoyne commenced business in 1871 as a UK importer of Australian wines and strode like a colossus across our landscape.

We hope he is pleased with our efforts and I am certain customers will be. At this introductory price this should become the bread and butter red yet with the knowledge you are drinking a very high grade. This is what we are good at and is very close to our ideal of vineyard, grower, maker.

Telegraph Road
South Australia
Classic Dry Red 2013

Early Telegraphs date back to 2006 though the first of the Telegraph Roads was a 2009 vintage.

Back in my shop retailing days I was the first to see the appeal in richly flavoured, bargain priced reds and did much to build consumer awareness for Penfolds Koonunga Hill, Yalumba Galway Claret and many, many others.

Thus we put a lot of effort into these styles of wines and now that Benjamin Parker is the winemaker in charge they are getting better and better. We discovered a Cabernet, made by a famous winemaker with vast Coonawarra experience, several months ago and found it blended nicely with our stocks.

On the tasting bench the wine stood out and was instantly pulled forward - as you do, (poor wines are pushed back).

The focus then is on the blend which is from many premium regions but all South Australian with a high percentage from Langhorne Creek. The result is excellent. Rated 10/10 on my value for money index.

Colton & Hewett McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
The provenance of the Colton and Hewett is good and this Cabernet from McLaren Vale will rate well in the list of great Glug bargains which now go back over 12 years. There have been so many though I'm still excited by the Glug 'Our Little Devil' Currency Creek Petit Verdot 2005 which sold for $6.99 and assured me that 'if you build it, they will come'.

Please recall that the great premium wine regions to which McLaren Vale belongs turn out a range of quality each vintage. Thus while this Cabernet has delicious flavours it is sold as a day to day red which will give enjoyment. McLaren Vale has a beach frontage and the cooling ocean plays nicely with the inland heat and this helps retain freshness which you

While we endeavour to 'preserve the difference' this wine is better with the adjustments and additions from the winemaker Parker. A good kitchen red for the next few years which hints at what it got close to becoming.

Princeland Watch
Limestone Coast
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

The south-eastern corner of South Australia is known as the Limestone Coast.

It extends from the Victorian border west to the mouth of the Murray River. I know the country well and the beaches on a warm, gentle day are paradise. Mostly though the winds from the great mega Southern Ocean sweep this country and let's just say it is bracing.

The attraction for vineyards is this cooling aspect and a range of interesting wines come from Robe-Mount Benson, Mount Gambier and more famous regions like Coonawarra and Padthaway.

We find very good value in the reds offered from this region and these we hold in mature oak and when stocks have built make a blend which is released under the Princeland brand.

We have been pleased with our last few releases and again strongly recommend the 2015 as you get a lot of complex flavours for a modest price.

P. B. Burgoyne
Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

This Cabernet has been slumbering in older oak for 18 months. We thought it special when we purchased it and decided to just take a deep breath and bide our time. Tying up money for long periods is the one thing about Glug that makes me nervous.

I know the region of Wrattonbully well and have been a visitor many times. The region covers a limestone plateau to the northeast of Coonawarra and the wines in my view taste pretty much the same.

In the 1980s it seemed that reds of the type that came from Coonawarra would always be in short supply so well into the 1990s a vast acreage was planted and given the name Wrattonbully, though that's a location and the nearest town is Naracoorte.

I repeat that in masked tastings I cannot distinguish between this region and the vastly more famous Coonawarra. This knowledge makes it a hunting ground for Glug as being able to buy the same taste at cheaper prices has appeal for this old wine merchant.

Big Red Mix No.12
from South Australia

To display some of our new wines the Big Red Mix rolls over to No 12. The highlights are many but the blockbuster Goat Square will thrill as will the Barbarossa. Yet the sleeper is the cleanskin McLaren Vale Cabernet which comes from a few cases left over after the labels ran out. If you purchased the 12 bottles as singles you will pay dollars more so it's a very good deal. Though as I said with the first, the joy is not the price or the saving but what is in each bottle.

Big Red Mix No. 12 from South Australia Mixed Dozen contains one bottle each of the following wines:
Dolan Sobels and Hope Pioneer Growers and Vignerons 'Squatters Three' Clare Valley Shiraz 2012
Cameron Country 'Red Post' Coonawarra Cabernet 2013
P. B. Burgoyne Adelaide hills Merlot Caberenet 2011
P. B. Burgoyne Wrattonbully Cabernet 2013
Princeland Watch Limestone Coast Cabernet 2013
Trennert 'West Winds' McLaren Vale Cabernet 2014
Albion Hills Langhorne Creek Cabernet 2013
Barbarossa 'The Valley' Blend Barossa Valley 2013
Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Crayford Barossa Valley Grenache 2013
Langdorf Kaldukee Barossa Valley Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2012

A Box of Big Red Surprises

Trial Bins 510, 508, 5210, 5110 Adelaidean-South Australia Mixed Dozen
The story so far has taken us from experiments or trial bin reds in 2016 to the release of three wines: the Barbarossa from the Barossa Valley and two from the long arc of premium SA country we call the Adelaidean. These three wines sell for $8.99, $7.99 and $6.99. This makes the mixed case of experimental wines from 2016 very good buying at $64 so I again draw your attention to this value.

Trial Big Reds from the Adelaidean Project

Trial Bins 510, 508, 5210, 5110 Adelaidean-South Australia Mixed Dozen
This special contains three bottles from four early red trials:

Trial Bin 510 Adelaidean Range Cabernet Merlot 2013
Trial Bin Bin 508 South Australia Dry Red 2012
The South Australian Bin 5210 Dry Red Blend No.2 N.V.
Trial Bin 5110 Adelaidean Range-South Australia Big Dry Red 2013

These Red Trials are made from premium regions along the lengthy, rocky arc which joins the Clare Valley to Kangaroo Island and includes the Barossa-Eden Valleys, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. This great sweep of vineyard country is as exciting as any large region on the Globe and may well be the best of them all. We refer to this wine country as the Mount-Lofty-Adelaidean range.

Great wines have been produced since the red wine trials of the 1950s by Max Schubert showed us the way. The object is to bring together wines of several varieties from many regions and produce a blend at a low price which we will call the Adelaidean. The first has gone to bottling. These wines are experiments we bottled in 2016. They are authentic, regional wines made by us and as a mixed pack offer outstanding value.
