A rough and ready rule at Glug is to buy good wine whenever it is offered and worry later about selling it. We will not buy a wine just because it is good but only when it locks in with the price we will pay. For $52 a case you will have no complaints. This is a slightly different version of the first bottling.

Winemakers like Benjamin Parker love making wines as that is what they do. This is the second Dry Red made from an interesting purchase of six months ago.

In large wineries with tens of tanks and leading from them are multiple hoses and pipes connecting with other tanks and barrels and things can go wrong. Two wines were blended which should not have been as they were different vintages.

We did not ask many questions but just focussed on the opportunity as though next we added additions back at the Glug winery. The wine is not only a blend of vintages but became a blend of varieties though Cabernet shines through.

It is though 100% from South Australia and mostly premium, high quality regions. Wines like this are too hard to sell in the conventional world but are ideal for the smart Glug customer.

As wine makers we accumulate stocks and currently have vintage 2011 to 2017. Most are left as they are and go to bottling. The specials this weekend are blended from this stock and are our value wines.

There are some great red bargains this weekend so let me tell you how they are made.

Each vintage we make wine and buy parcels from grower-makers and winemakers whose wines we like. These reds are aged for a number of years and this year we have released vintages from 2011 to 2015. We also released the Village Belle Barossa Valley Bonvedro 2016, as it's very special and we believe it should be tried when youthful.

This accumulation of stock is very important, particularly when making our value wines. These are built from these reserves as we are able to blend wines we have bought well with far more expensive wines to end up with an exciting, full flavoured, ripe taste for a good price.

1. Farmers & Growers 'Ploughman' South Australia Classic Dry Red 2013: We are very attracted to bulk parcels from the Adelaidean-Mount Lofty Range particularly from less recognised regions like Langhorne Creek. Such a wine is a base of the Ploughman. $4.99
2. Borderland Estate 'Tumbleweed' South Australia Classic Dry Red 2013: The Tumbleweed is a strikingly original interpretation of a big red made from of a base of wonderful Cabernet blended with many other parcels from our stocks. $4.99

3. Light & Finniss South Australia Adelaidean Bin 536 Dry Red Blend 2012: The Trial Bin range of reds commenced in 2016. The idea is to make a strong red at a low price from the vast range on offer from wine regions extending from the Clare Valley to Kangaroo Island. This is the second release from these trials. $6.99

Even at the low price these wines are made in small volumes, a feature that distinguishes us from the very large volume supermarket wines. Not only are our wines hand made in the Barossa Valley but we like to think they have an originality and excitement which is not found in wines made in 100,000 case lots.

Classic Dry Red 2013

The Ploughman is 100% from premium regions of South Australia from the large sweep of vineyards grown between the Southern Flinders and Kangaroo Island. I have little doubt that this is one of the great wine region on earth.

We buy parcels of wine every vintage and these accumulate over many vintages to become our precious reserves or holdings of bulk wine. From this stock we blend wines that are special for the prices asked.

This Ploughman then represents these discoveries of wines we think were undervalued in the market place The Ploughman contains a large percentage of Cabernet but also other varieties and the flavour has been lifted with a small amount of wine from younger vintages.

We want deep colours and full flavours as that is our style while the hard part is to add some mystery to the taste and this is often found by the addition of a less common variety such as Mataro or an Italian variety. We made just over 100 cases.

I can now place myself in the category that its never to old to learn. Not only has the business matured but so has the winemaker Benjamin and coming up fast is Greg the assistant winemaker.

Spending 2015 and 2016 pondering how to make better value Big Red specials has turned up some new ideas.

It shows in this Borderland though of great help is a special parcel of red we purchased from a grower down in Langhorne Creek which sits in the background.

We find you can make tasty interesting wines and sell at great prices if the volumes are small though we feel for those who have to gear up and make say 100,000 cases as you have to turn to the Riverland to get the base volume making the job very hard.

You will discover good value in the Tumbleweed though its place is to be part of your regular drinking.

Dry Red Blend 2012

The fruits of the winemaker Benjamin Parker appear with this excellent red, the result of the Adelaidean project, which is on-going.

Imagine a field blend but instead of a mix from a single farmers vineyards it is instead a mix from numerous farmers vineyards that can be hundreds of kilometres apart.

This is quite common in large overseas regions and of course has a long history in Australia.

Indeed one of the greatest wines made was a blend of Barossa Valley and Coonawarra from 1962 while today many Penfolds and Wolf Blass reds are multi-district blends.

We are after good flavours but being retailers concentrate on the end selling price which means a wine like this will not contain high quality Barossa Valley Shiraz.

It does though contain high quality varieties which sell for bargain prices and we cannot for the life of us understand why this is so.

Adelaidean Dry Red 2011

If you want value for money well here it is. I got great satisfaction in watching this wine being composed over several months.

We had the building blocks of Shiraz and Cabernet from many South Australian premium regions so the base was easy but then the object is to build up further interest and complexity and this is done with other varieties and regions.

It is also where we go to the pantry looking for the sauce selections as tiny amounts shift the palate even further. Thus we had purchased a big, heavy Grenache which had far to much oak and it became the sauce Ben added. Note large companies do what we do but at this price point the minimum make would be 100,000 cases.

We made 297; why the great shearer Jackie Howe took the wool from more sheep than that in one magnificent day. Also note since this is a blend of many regions I have coined the term Adelaidean for reds made with wines from the Clare to Currency Creek.

Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

I have to go back to 2012 to find the last time we sold a Barossa Valley Shiraz of this quality at this price. Indeed this Burgoyne is all we like and look for in a wine. The origin is the most sought after region in Australia-the Barossa Valley, the grapes were grown by well known farmers, the wine maker Benjamin Parker prepared the wine for bottling which is a critical job and we supervised the bottling locally.

The wine was not made by us but on the bench against comparable samples this wine stood out as a grade above the others the and as you do we pulled the sample forward. The transaction was done and here it is released under the wine-merchant label of P B Burgoyne. Burgoyne commenced business in 1871 as a UK importer of Australian wines and strode like a colossus across our landscape. We hope he is pleased with our efforts and I am certain customers will be.

At this introductory price this should become the bread and butter red yet with the knowledge you are drinking a very high grade. This is what we are good at and is very close to our ideal of vineyard, grower, maker.

Classic Dry Red 2013

Early Telegraphs date back to 2006 though the first of the Telegraph Roads was a 2009 vintage.

Back in my shop retailing days I was the first to see the appeal in richly flavoured, bargain priced reds and did much to build consumer awareness for Penfolds Koonunga Hill, Yalumba Galway Claret and many, many others. Thus we put a lot of effort into these styles of wines and now that Benjamin Parker is the winemaker in charge they are getting better and better.

We discovered a Cabernet, made by a famous winemaker with vast Coonawarra experience, several months ago and found it blended nicely with our stocks. On the tasting bench the wine stood out and was instantly pulled forward-as you do, (poor wines are pushed back).

The focus then is on the blend which is from many premium regions but all South Australian with a high percentage from Langhorne Creek. The result is excellent. Rated 10/10 on my value for money index.

Big Red Mix No.13
from South Australia

To display some of our new wines the Big Red Mix rolls over to No 13. The highlights are many but the Village Belle Mourvedre will thrill as will the Crayford Shiraz which is a blockbuster Barossa. However as we love our Grenache the best wine is likely the Hope Farm Grenache. The joy of buying a mixed dozen is keeping up with what we do and concentrating on what is in each bottle plus the price is attractive.
