I just love what the winemaking team are now doing as my job gets easier when a steady stream of terrific reds can be offered at good prices each weekend. They start with bench tests carefully recording the amounts blended and steadily complexity builds. Whoops they might say, to much Mataro, so they go back a step and begin again. Take your pick from two recent additions to the list both offering my ULTRA VALUE.

It's in the nature of winemakers to experiment. For most the highest art is to chisel away at the same piece each vintage, rounding and lengthening to make the ultimate masterpiece. The finest craftsmen may charge $50 or so for the result.

For Benjamain and Greg the daily aim is far different, it is to chisel away and define the best possible reds which can sell for $6.

This new Bin 566 is an example of winemakers art but done with the selling price always being considered.

We make dozens of wines like this each year and they are triggered off by a fortunate bulk wine purchase, in this case a few thousand litres of Adelaidean Cabernet. Other components are in stock and the race begins to craft something different and enjoyable.

The best ideas are finally released as a fully labelled product. To get the balance just right they ended up with a tank that made 78 dozen.

I believe all who drink wine have admiration for those who labour hard to make the greatest wines, some of which sell for $1000 a bottle. At times we may envy those who can afford the wines.

Back in the day to day world over 30% of wine is sold in casks and much of this is very good. In-between these two extremes, yet under $12, is where we enjoy ourselves and spend a lot of time crafting wonderful tasty reds and whites.

Large mistakes are made when wine is graded and then sold and we think we are particularly good at seeing what others miss. At least one of the reasons is because we are prepared to buy many tiny amounts whereas a large business only deals in say 200,000 litre amounts.

Smallness is good as it preserves the differences and ecvery wine made is different to every other. This Borderland shows our strength which is to duplicate the boldness of a Barossa Shiraz for a much lower price.

You can’t of course but the art is to see how close you can go. With that said the Bush Telegraph is wrapped around a core of Cabernet.

When experts are confused about what they taste what should you do?

I read a lot to keep on top of what’s on in the wine world. Monday began with news of the 2017 vintage which was big, by mid week I was marvelling how our most profitable market was now China (note-not by volume), then a story about Wrattonbully, a region we love, appeared in the UK Decanter; and then I hit pay-dirt.

You need to know about Rudy Kurniawan. A new book about his short but active life in US wine circles has just appeared: In Vino Duplicitas: The Rise and Fall of a Wine Forger Extraordinaire.

Three quotes set the tone: Few collectors, especially those new to the game, actually knew what the real thing should taste like. 'It's surprisingly easy to fob off flawed or inauthentic wine,' says Wilf Jaeger. 'At a certain point, people have drunk too much and they are not paying attention.'

Kurniawan knew the truth of it: ‘In wine-tasting and wine-talk there is an enormous amount of humbug.i>’
'Rudy took the innocence away from what we do... I'll be pissed off at him for that for the rest of my life.' Allen Meadows, [a burgundy specialist].

You see Rudy specialised in making wine in his kitchen and selling these creations for thousands of dollars a bottle.

If you pay the big dollars but have no idea what you are drinking what does this mean?

I have to go back to 2012 to find the last time we sold a Barossa Valley Shiraz of this quality at this price. Indeed this Burgoyne is all we like and look for in a wine.

The origin is the most sought after region in Australia-the Barossa Valley, the grapes were grown by well known farmers, the wine maker Benjamin Parker prepared the wine for bottling which is a critical job and we supervised the bottling locally.

The wine was not made by us but on the bench against comparable samples this wine stood out as a grade above the others the and as you do we pulled the sample forward. The transaction was done and here it is released under the wine-merchant label of P B Burgoyne.

Burgoyne commenced business in 1871 as a UK importer of Australian wines and strode like a colossus across our landscape. We hope he is pleased with our efforts and I am certain customers will be.

At this introductory price this should become the bread and butter red yet with the knowledge you are drinking a very high grade. This is what we are good at and is very close to our ideal of vineyard, grower, maker.

Oakley Adams
Shiraz 2014

An exceptional region for grapes lies in the far, south east corner of South Australia. The most famous region is Coonawarra where vines date to the 1890s.

In 1964 they planted similar land to Coonawarra at Padthaway, about 100 kilometres north west. For a time the large companies Lindemans, Seppelts and Hardys promoted a range of wines labelled as Padthaway, such was the importance attached to the region.

Getting buyers familiar with a new region is very hard and later they retreated. So the vines have matured, the grapes are beautiful and the resulting wine is now blended into many regular brands to boost the quality.

Thus brilliant parcels of wine can be purchased at medium to low prices. Padthaway ranks with Langhorne Creek as our favourite regions for exceptional value for money.

This Oakley Adams is such an example and is a wine for smart wine buyers. Incidentally I developed the label concept of Oakley Adams in 1996 and its good to see it back on bottles.

Bin 536 Dry Red Blend 2012

The fruits of the winemaker Benjamin Parker appear with this excellent red, the result of the Adelaidean project, which is on-going.

Imagine a field blend but instead of a mix from a single farmers vineyards it is instead a mix from numerous farmers vineyards that can be hundreds of kilometres apart.

This is quite common in large overseas regions and of course has a long history in Australia.

Indeed one of the greatest wines made was a blend of Barossa Valley and Coonawarra from 1962 while today many Penfolds and Wolf Blass reds are multi-district blends.

We are after good flavours but being retailers concentrate on the end selling price which means a wine like this will not contain high quality Barossa Valley Shiraz.

It does though contain high quality varieties which sell for bargain prices and we cannot for the life of us understand why this is so.

Limestone Coast
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

When we search for good bulk reds at value prices we start in regions that are less know which means the produce far more supply than demand – for that regions name.

The region called the Limestone Coast is a huge area in the South East corner of South Australia which abuts the Victorian border.

There are vineyards from Bordertown to Mount Gambier and west across to Robe and with outposts like Lucindale.

We know this country very well and its one of our favourite regions as the grape quality is high, since it is cool maritime, yet prices sit below fair on our value for money gauge.

Enter this wonderful Burgoyne Cabernet discovered by the winemakers.

So what does it taste like? Frankly I cannot tell the difference between this Burgoyne and a similar wine from Coonawarra so you may as well pocket the difference.

Classic Dry Red 2013

The Ploughman is 100% from premium regions of South Australia from the large sweep of vineyards grown between the Southern Flinders and Kangaroo Island. I have little doubt that this is one of the great wine region on earth.

We buy parcels of wine every vintage and these accumulate over many vintages to become our precious reserves or holdings of bulk wine. From this stock we blend wines that are special for the prices asked.

This Ploughman then represents these discoveries of wines we think were undervalued in the market place The Ploughman contains a large percentage of Cabernet but also other varieties and the flavour has been lifted with a small amount of wine from younger vintages.

We want deep colours and full flavours as that is our style while the hard part is to add some mystery to the taste and this is often found by the addition of a less common variety such as Mataro or an Italian variety. We made just over 100 cases.

Salem Valley
Sauvignon Blanc 2015

What can a grower do? Australian Sauvignon blanc has been drowned by the New Zealand flood which is now over five million cases per year. Likely this is why we were able to buy this wonderful wine at such a low price.

In any month we taste many samples though the number varies as it depends on whether we need more wines. Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide Hills has won widespread acceptance while those from the adjoining Eden Valley are harder to sell.

A guiding principle of ours is to buy good wines when we find them; and this applies regardless of the origin or variety.

Some might say this wine has too much flavour to be mistaken for the New Zealand or Adelaide Hills style.

Who cares as the Salem is an outstanding wine which is true to what the variety does in the cool Eden Valley.

I give it 10/10 on my value for money scale and we take delight in preserving the differences of this unique and magical region.

Big Red Mix No.13
from South Australia

To display some of our new wines the Big Red Mix rolls over to No 13. The highlights are many but the Village Belle Mourvedre will thrill as will the Crayford Shiraz which is a blockbuster Barossa. However as we love our Grenache the best wine is likely the Hope Farm Grenache. The joy of buying a mixed dozen is keeping up with what we do and concentrating on what is in each bottle plus the price is attractive.
