Three New Bargains

+ Ten Best Buys for Season 2017

One Day Special
Best Christmas Purchase No. 10

Bengalee Barossa Valley Grenache 2014
The Bengalee becomes the 'Best Christmas Purchase No.10' and what a buy. Usually this brilliant Barossa grenache is attainable for $11.99 but the giving spirit of the season has taken hold of me and I can't help but offer it with a generous saving of $38.88 a case. I have no doubt if this wine was called ‘Big Barossa Red’ or ‘Bold Rich Barossan’ or a quirky name I’m not smart enough to invent, rather than Grenache, this magnificent drink would have sold out years ago. What instead of Chateauneuf du Pape it was called Luthers Proclamation in homage to the first Barossa settlers. It belongs in your glass with a limit of one case per order.

Very Great Barossa Red Save $38.88

Bengalee Barossa Valley Grenache 2014

The first Bengalee was a Shiraz 2008 and the first Grenache was the 2010 making this release the fourth Grenache. All wine regions over a certain size show enough landscape variability such that it makes sense to talk of sub-regions.

In this case the vineyard source was up around Greenock along the western ridges where its higher and being from the northern Barossa Valley also a bit warmer. This region also takes the brunt of the westerly weather so it is often wetter in winter.

These landscape changes are not sharp so drawing boundaries is silly but there is enough variation in the Greenock sub region to move the flavours away from the norm. Grenache was planted likely from the start in the 1840s though as often mentioned being able to buy 100% Barossa Valley Grenache is quite recent.

At Glug we are big supporters of the variety, indeed we see drawing your attention to Barossa Grenache as a duty but alas the beauty of the flavours are not widely embraced. Very simply this spells out bargain as the Barossa has a finite size and the flavours cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

Follow the guide to the best buys for Christmas 2017, now I've found No.10 and I can't seem to stop.

Benjamin and Greg have been busy in the winery bottling in what can only be described as a flurry of bottling activity. They are feeding my habit as I have become well accustomed to prowling around for specials I can send your way.

Today I have plucked the Bengalee Grenache out from its hiding place in the warehouse to offer you for your Christmas table as our No.10 Xmas Special. It's a magnificent Barossa red and a great buy at the sensational price for today of $105 a case.
The all time best buy is though the Goat Square Shiraz and if we are silly enough to offer a FREE Ziegenmarkt just take the prize. We also release the Kaldukee Rose, which was made from the best Cinsault and Grenache to offer a point of difference.

I can't start December off without including the absolute cracker Barbarossa Red as Christmas Special No.9, get in quick as stocks are low. Need I say more?

Adelaide Hills
Sauvignon Blanc 2017

The 2017 is sourced from the same Adelaide Hills vineyards as previous vintages. The town of Woodside is centrally located in the Adelaide Hills at a height of about 370 metres. The grapes for the Ariadne are sourced from further west, well into the climb up the Basket Range, which is the hot place for aspiring young winemakers.

To make great Sauvignon Blanc you need a cool growing climate and for Australia this means a high elevation. This also means the variety will take on a slightly different expression to the popular New Zealand wines which are from cool climate latitudes but near sea level.

As the excitement of wine is about its variation I think you should be drinking a range of Sauvignon Blanc’s. You will be the judge but since we moved to this locality in the Adelaide Hills I now score the Ariadne up with the best Australians and the $10 plus New Zealand wines.

I am so confident with this statement that I give the Ariadne my 10/10 value for money sticker.

Barossa Valley
Dry Red Blend No.3 2014

This is unbelievable and one of our greatest ever Barossa reds. This is an incredibly good Barossa Valley blend which was created to preserve a tiny parcel of very great wine. The story thus far.

We began Red Wine Trials in 2016 to test blending ideas, using less popular varieties, from premium regions along the Adelaidean-Mount Lofty Range.

One success later became the ‘field blend’ of various Barossa Valley varieties now called Barbarossa. Benjamin had been sitting on 190 litres of a fabulous Mataro from Neville Pfieffers old Tanunda Block but it had no home. It had to be preserved at all costs and he found it was enhanced, not swamped, by the addition of 70 litres of Durif from Kalleske’s block in the northern Barossa and then polished with a drop of Cabernet.

This is one out of the box and again I must place a limit though Benjamin is certain it will cellar well so if you have a place the maximum becomes two cases per order, one for now and one for Ron. Quantity made was 396 bottles.

Barossa Valley
Rose 2016

Wine begins as confusing and ends up simple. I’m now at the simple stage. If it tastes good and the price is right I will enjoy it. Everything else makes little sense and its only how long the journey takes you, that will be the issue.

Which brings me to Barossa Valley rose. I have been attracted to the style for many decades but found few that fitted my expansive viewpoint which has a narrow definition. In a nutshell the wines were too sweet and too expensive.

The Barossa Valley was also used for many decades to make popular styles like Kaiser Stuhl Gold Medal Rose and in the process the craftsmanship got lost.
It's back with a wine like the Kaldukee which was made from the best Cinsault and Grenache to offer a point of difference. Note this is not like a chilled white with a bit of pink colouring, it’s the real deal and worth every penny.

To hammer home the simple point we are not interested in making a coloured, crisp, cold alternative to sauvignon blanc but an alternative taste without much skin contact-though the wine should be served chilled.

8th Vintage Barossa Salt of the Earth

Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015 (second and final bottling)

The Goat is one of our special wines. The Barossa Valley is a small, rare, unique piece of the earths crust and only from this spot do you get red wines which display such a powerful and unusual concentration of mid palate weight.

At times the fruit is so intense as to appear sweet a feature which can make wines which live for 50 years. The Goat Square wines come from a group of vineyards in the northern Barossa and any that look more interesting and intense than others are separated for the Goat.

The wine is named after Goat Square which is an historic location in the centre of Tanunda which in the 1840s to 1860s was a weekend market place, particularly for livestock.

This is the 8th vintage and the second and final bottling of about 150 cases. The winemaker is Benjamin Parker and we refer to Goat Square as the salt of the earth.

A few alterations to No 13 means a change to No 14 though the highlight is still the Village Belle Mourvedre though in second place comes the Hope Farm McLaren Vale Grenache. Honourable mentions go to the Trennert McLaren Vale Shiraz and the rather stout Ploughman. The joy of buying a mixed dozen is keeping up with what we do and concentrating on what is in each bottle plus the price is attractive.

Oakley Adams Padthaway Shiraz 2014
Cameron County 'Red Post' Coonawarra Cabernet 2013
P. B. Burgoyne McLaren Vale Cabernet 2014
