The Top 12 Christmas Bargains

Oakley Adams is Best Christmas Purchase No.12

Oakley Adams Padthaway Shiraz 2014
This Pathaway Shiraz is beauty from around 100km north west of the Coonawarra region in South Australia. I'm closing in on my hunt for sensational wines at great value. What better way to round off the Best Christmas Bargains this weekend with No.12 down to an easy $7.41. That's $89 a case for South Australian Shiraz. As with all of our good things the limit is one case per order.

Padthaway Spells

Oakley Adams Padthaway Shiraz 2014

An exceptional region for grapes lies in the far, south east corner of South Australia. The most famous region is Coonawarra where vines date to the 1890s. In 1964 they planted similar land to Coonawarra at Padthaway, about 100 kilometres north west.

For a time the large companies Lindemans, Seppelts and Hardys promoted a range of wines labelled as Padthaway, such was the importance attached to the region.

Getting buyers familiar with a new region is very hard and later they retreated. So the vines have matured, the grapes are beautiful and the resulting wine is now blended into many regular brands to boost the quality. Thus brilliant parcels of wine can be purchased at medium to low prices.

Padthaway ranks with Langhorne Creek as our favourite regions for exceptional value for money. This Oakley Adams is such an example and is a wine for smart wine buyers. Incidentally I developed the label concept of Oakley Adams in 1996 and it's good to see it back on bottles.

This is it, my guide to the best buys for Christmas 2017, enjoy.

If you've been following my determined journey for the Best Christmas Purchases over the last week, you'll know I've been growing in confidence (although winemaker Benjamin might call it reckless abandon) as the days have delivered offer after offer. This weekend is no exception.

I've selected for you the Restless Farm 'Pig' as No.11, at $9.29 a bottle this is Barossa Valley Shiraz you can drink now or mature over many years.

The all time best buy is though the Goat Square Shiraz and if we are silly enough to offer a FREE Ziegenmarkt just take the prize. That's all twelve Best Christmas Purchases out for the picking.
I'm enjoying this too much to stop now, so I'm throwing caution into the wind altogether and leaving yesterday's Bengalee Grenache down at $105 a case. I'm also inclined to send the Ariadne back to its opening price of $8.25 a bottle.

Snap them up and enjoy as I'll have to stop somewhere and I am certain midnight on Sunday will be it. Thanks.

Adelaide Hills
Sauvignon Blanc 2017

The 2017 is sourced from the same Adelaide Hills vineyards as previous vintages. The town of Woodside is centrally located in the Adelaide Hills at a height of about 370 metres. The grapes for the Ariadne are sourced from further west, well into the climb up the Basket Range, which is the hot place for aspiring young winemakers.

To make great Sauvignon Blanc you need a cool growing climate and for Australia this means a high elevation. This also means the variety will take on a slightly different expression to the popular New Zealand wines which are from cool climate latitudes but near sea level.

As the excitement of wine is about its variation I think you should be drinking a range of Sauvignon Blanc’s. You will be the judge but since we moved to this locality in the Adelaide Hills I now score the Ariadne up with the best Australians and the $10 plus New Zealand wines.

I am so confident with this statement that I give the Ariadne my 10/10 value for money sticker.

Barossa Valley
Grenache 2014

The first Bengalee was a Shiraz 2008 and the first Grenache was the 2010 making this release the fourth Grenache. All wine regions over a certain size show enough landscape variability such that it makes sense to talk of sub-regions.

In this case the vineyard source was up around Greenock along the western ridges where its higher and being from the northern Barossa Valley also a bit warmer. This region also takes the brunt of the westerly weather so it is often wetter in winter.

These landscape changes are not sharp so drawing boundaries is silly but there is enough variation in the Greenock sub region to move the flavours away from the norm. Grenache was planted likely from the start in the 1840s though as often mentioned being able to buy 100% Barossa Valley Grenache is quite recent.

At Glug we are big supporters of the variety, indeed we see drawing your attention to Barossa Grenache as a duty but alas the beauty of the flavours are not widely embraced. Very simply this spells out bargain as the Barossa has a finite size and the flavours cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

Restless Farm
'The Pig'
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

There's gold in them thar hills’ did not come true for South Australia although they did work an alluvial river flat not far from the Barossa Valley town of Lyndoch which is known as the Barossa Goldfields. The real gold has come of course with the recognition of the Barossa Valley as a unique, world class, wine region.

Finding another place just like the Barossa is unlikely as while vines will spring up in many new locations my perusal of the global geography shows the location is unique. Barossa Valley Shiraz is a world class drink and when well priced is a must buy. The range of Restless Farm wines dates back to the 2008 vintage with the first being The Goat from Padthaway of 40 cases.

The other animals down on this strange farm are the Goose, the Elephant, the Camel and the Bunny. As expected The Pig is stout, round and soft and to bring you up to date two real Berkshires called Crackle and Pop have been purchased and are growing quickly. Commence drinking now though this Restless Farm Shiraz will mature over many years.

8th Vintage Barossa Salt of the Earth

Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015 (second and final bottling)

The Goat is one of our special wines. The Barossa Valley is a small, rare, unique piece of the earths crust and only from this spot do you get red wines which display such a powerful and unusual concentration of mid palate weight.

At times the fruit is so intense as to appear sweet a feature which can make wines which live for 50 years. The Goat Square wines come from a group of vineyards in the northern Barossa and any that look more interesting and intense than others are separated for the Goat.

The wine is named after Goat Square which is an historic location in the centre of Tanunda which in the 1840s to 1860s was a weekend market place, particularly for livestock.

This is the 8th vintage and the second and final bottling of about 150 cases. The winemaker is Benjamin Parker and we refer to Goat Square as the salt of the earth.

I mixed up my first Xmas mix in November, 1977, to see how customers responded and sold a few boxes. Since then I have selected hundreds for everyday use. A few alterations to No 13 means a change to No 14 though the highlight is still the Village Belle Mourvedre though in second place comes the Hope Farm McLaren Vale Grenache. Honourable mentions go to the Trennert McLaren Vale Shiraz and the rather stout Ploughman.
