Wednesday Big Red Buys

Both for $8.99

Bagot Station 'Captains Table' Barossa Valley Red Blend No 2 2012
PPB 31 Premium Private Bin 'Three Hares' Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache 2016

Difficult to say which red is better and it comes down to a preference for the taste of youth and freshness versus that of maturity with the onset of warm leather. I do though like the greatness of the 2012 vintage and there is at best a few weeks of Bagot left.

Bagot Station 'Captains Table' Barossa Valley Red Blend No 2 2012
Each year we buy many tiny volumes and can make a better wine by blending three or four of these into a commercial parcel which is about 30 cases. This preserves the regional characters and keeps the price modest.

PPB 31 Premium Private Bin 'Three Hares' Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache 2016
The two great heritage varieties of the Barossa Valley form the backbone of this winemaker’s experiment. Made in tiny amounts hence the provisional label which keeps costs down.

It may take a life’s work in a new region to measure success but with some varieties this of course is not guaranteed.

As you get older the thoughts harden thus while I adore the wine business with its fairy tales, fables and nursery rhymes, I now know some of them may not be true.

Last week I was exploring the cold, heartland of the Adelaide Hills, up in the hills above Adelaide; looking at the landscape and vineyards around Summertown and Uraidla. I passed the iconic property of Ashton Hills, whose wines I have been tracking for many decades. The first plantings date to 1982, and from this time I really believed in the project.

The cellar door was closed but I purchased a bottle of the Ashton Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2016 at a nearby pub for $75 simply because I wanted to hold it up in triumph.

Alas while a nice drink but you want more for this price and I fear after 35 years of hard toil the dream will not come true.
This makes me reflect on many things:
-the gamble of being the first to plant knowing decades or longer must unfold before you get an inkling (incidentally nearby Lenswood dates to 1981),
-the fickle nature of Pinot Noir or as is said ‘the heartbreak grape’.
-opinions about what a wine should be as changing fashions, winemaker’s philosophy, to human genetic differences, are all in play in the market place.

I wish them well with Pinot in the Adelaide Hills but I am relieved to be penning these thoughts in the safe, climatic region of the Barossa Valley.

Two good specials are offered this Wednesday and while both will please as the varieties thrive in a warm climate, which you favour will depend on preferring, the taste of youth or maturity.

And running as an outsider is the newly released Village Belle Barossa Valley Pinot Noir 2017 which in the glass will be the best of the lot.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

I have pointed this Chardonnay highly as it has fruit and flavour plus that extra elusive complexity. Fresh, vibrant with that exotic lift. Great effort by Benjamin.

Langdorf 'Kaldukee'
Barossa Valley
Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2012

Wonderful complex flavours plus it shows maturation from a great vintage. Recall this is not a chocolate syrup Shiraz but it is still full, rich, ripe and warm. You do need variety and the Kaldukee delivers.

Stratus

Startling because this is wonderful and teaches us to be careful about jumping to conclusions about where varieties should be grown. Bring it on!

South Australian All Red Selection Series No.3

I put together this mixed dozen to show that under $7 we have a range of hand made, individual reds which for many customers will be all they need. Wines come and go quickly at Glug as making huge amounts and smothering vintage differences is not our way.

The Big Red Mix No.18

This is our longest running mixed dozen because it is the most popular. It provides a balance between expensive varieties and our more general favourites plus provides a saving on buying the dozen bottles separately. A real Glug winner.
