Flavour

Selling Wines with Flavour

It's not the little wines you remember but those with flavour. The best wines I have consumed always had flavour. They hit the palate with a bang and left little doubt I was on to something good. With every wine we sell that is what Glug will deliver. Try these Friday specials which show our approach.

P.B. Burgoyne
McLaren Vale
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
This Burgoyne bottling is from McLaren Vale the region the London based Peter Bond Burgoyne first began imported from way back in the 1870s.

Glug revived the brand with a 2006 McLaren Vale Shiraz and I hope somewhere a customer still has a few bottles as I bet it is superb.

Winemaker’s Individual Barrel Selection GH12
Barossa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Bottling single barrels was an idea that goes back to our beginnings but unless you can work out a way to do it yourself becomes impractical.

The reason, to move a bit closer to the perfect drink - preserving the cream of the differences.

Princeland Watch
Limestone Coast
Shiraz Cabernet 2015

To make these blends work you take the Cabernet from a cooler region and the Shiraz from further inland as herbal flavours so readily build in cool climate Shiraz.

Another superb effort from Benjamin Parker and Greg Liebelt.

Complex wines have flavour as they contain more flavour compounds that appeal to wine drinkers. In lesser years there are fewer compounds. The trick is to find complex wines with interesting flavours that do not cost much.

Its not the lesser wines you will remember but the wines with flavour.

The lesser vintages are less complex with lower concentrations of some flavour chemicals. At this stage we do not know enough about the chemistry that makes the best wines though it will be triggered off by the weather of the vintage and good wine making.

More of the right chemicals means more flavour compounds and this will show up on your taste buds.

In a warm region like the Barossa Valley even the wines of lesser vintages will attain good ripeness levels and become a delight to drink. Its when they are compared to the better vintages that you will detect a missing intensity.
Wine regions in more marginal climates is where the differences between vintages are more pronounced. A difficult vintage may mean the wine is fault free but unattractive to drink. In my experience the best vintages create more flavour and generally this comes with higher alcohol.

So the Glug specialty is intense rich wines with flavour. Those from the better vintages are better again though it takes a few years to decide which have the more complex tastes.

The Friday red specials will provide satisfaction in the glass and are keenly priced.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Selling Wines That Taste Good

Karrawirra
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015
Karrawirra represents why we came to the Barossa Valley and why we are enthusiasts for Barossa Shiraz.

This red has it all and particularly the mid palate sweetness that for us is essential in the styles we like to sell.

Other makers dumb down this rich, sweet core of fruit but not us. Worthy of the high score.

Langdorf
'Kaldukee'
Barossa Valley
Semillon 2016

I have always been a fan of Barossa Semillon but not the early picked version which tries to be something it can never be.

No I want the full flavoured version but served stunningly cold. That’s heaven.

Glug BIN 674
Langhorne Creek
Shiraz 2016

Wolf Blass saw what others did not in the early 1970s and then won three Jimmy Watson Trophies in successive years with 100% Langhorne Creek wines.

Most of the wine is blended away yet the best parcels are as good as any made. Benjamin blended and bottled this Shiraz for the last day of the sale just to prove this point.

Exploring the Full Favoured Reds of South Australia No.4

The reds of South Australia are very special. The reason is the geography of the premium vineyard regions means the climate is a balance between cooling and ripening in a way which is not found anywhere else on the globe. The bunches of grapes are pulled towards the coolness of the Great Southern Mega Ocean which slows flavour development, which can alter quickly by the intense, inland, heat flowing in from the baking, red centre.

It is this balance, constantly tilting, which makes complex, intense, interesting flavours which are best referred to as warm flavoured reds. Though a grower in Coonawarra may well disagree. Any-way this is the first mix of a wonderful new selection.

It's All Barossa Valley - 100% Guaranteed No.5

The Australian press, tourist agencies and P.R. companies all agree that the most popular wine region, the most recognised, is the Barossa Valley. The late, great Chef Joel Rubuchon was famous for his mashed potatoes which contained 25% butter. ‘No one who tasted his recipe, made with 25 per cent butter, could forget the experience’. This reads like a proxy for the Barossa Valley, not just a warm climate red but one exploding with 25% more flavour.

Each dozen contains one bottle of the following wines:
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Bengalee Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Karrawirra Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Kitts Creek Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016
