I don't know if you guys know this, but the band of the past five minutes in
London has been the Guillemots. They are nominees for the Mercury prize so
just mention their name and someone will bowl you over trying to get there first.
You'll never get a ticket to see them. It's weird because what is essentially a
dive bar band are forced to play stadiums, then there is this big shock for them
when they have to play dive bars again. Poor little treasures.
I love the Guillemots. They are like and art rock band that have been crushed by
heartache, this makes them good.
Jo and I had tickets to see them the other night. They were playing in a venue
cleverly hidden in a shopping mall, a strong lack of rock atmosphere in there.
We turned up about 9.30 and were thrown into some kind of social experiment
being done on rock fans. (What will happen if you force rock fans to watch
talentless MC's who don't even play instruments for hours before a band they
really want to see?) It was horrific.
Jo said flat out it was the worst day of her
Then the Guillemots came on and we forgot what had just happened to us,
like electro-shocked monkeys or something. They are that good.
