Glorious Expression of Barossa

On Tasting
The John Vickery Leo Buring Tasting 1997
Monday, 24th May 2010  - David Farmer

John Vickery

While I'm uncertain of the value of general tasting notes perhaps we agree that being able to refer back to a note about a classic wine can be very useful. I refer in particular to the compendium of notes of the world's great wines that Michael Broadbent has published. They are a pleasure to read even if we will never taste the wines.

On the 30th April, 1997 I attended a tasting at Richmond Grove in the Barossa Valley which spanned the rieslings made by John Vickery over his long career. I felt that day I tasted particularly well so for the historical record post my scores and comments on these world class Australian Classics. Indeed at the finish I was asked to give the 'vote of thanks' to John. Some of these wines still come up for sale at auctions.

I have given these wines high scores so please remember they were picked because many were the best that Vickery made. Also these were the best from numerous bottles opened so they were the 'pick of the cellar'.

A note about Florita. John Vickery loved the fruit from the Florita vineyard. This vineyard was purchased by Leo Buring in the early 1950's for sherry production. Later it was planted to riesling. In 1962 Lindemans purchased Leo Buring. In 1971 Lindemans was purchased by Philip Morris. In the 1980's Lindemans sold Florita and it was purchased by the Jim Barry family. From the 1994 vintage Vickery was again able to source grapes from the Barry's Florita.
