A Wine for Richard

I have perhaps a more nuanced view about the taste of wine than most commentators. Objective measures such as what part drinking has played and income level are naturally very important. To this I add that what we see in a glass of wine depends also upon how our lives have unfolded and thus the many subjective influences which have moulded our outlooks and beliefs.

I believe it is incredibly difficult to divorce yourself from what you are when you pass judgment on a wine. I'll return to this theme but illustrate the idea with a review for a wine we recently blended called Langdorf Kaldukee.

This is the wine Ben and I made for Brother Richard. Richard takes his wine drinking very seriously but tastes and assesses wines in a way that is different to how others commonly judge. He looks for what others do not see or understand, homes in on the core features and is not distracted by the appearance. I attribute his insights to his long career as a political journalist which has alters his views of how he evaluates both wine and food. With fish for example he no longer likes them cooked, rather thinly sliced in the Japanese manner.

Richard began as a cadet journalist for the ABC at 18 and by 21 was the political reporter for the Launceston, Examiner. After 52 years he is still writing about politics and has seen umpteen State premiers, multiple Prime Ministers, and party leaders of all types rise and fall. His antennae are set to detect the merest whiff of pretension, falseness and hubris, indeed his ability is unparalleled, and the wine business being packed full of all three, gives him ample scope for amusement. He constantly surprises me with the way he cuts to the core of a wine and also has an uncanny ability to rummage through the bargain bin and rise clutching the very best bottle.

The base of the Langdorf is Mataro and being a 2009 must have been shown to dozens of buyers. What they did not see, I did as I have been trained about Mataro by the wine maker Rolf Binder. The wine had a lovely meaty character, a feature Rolf has taught me to understand, and this is not understood by many judges. The seller was exhausted and passed it over cheaply. Ben got to work with his buddy Phil and have turned the base Mataro into a full triumph. On being shown the wine I said; 'this is a wine for Richard' and rather exuberantly exclaimed it was worth $18. On my value for money scale I rate this 10/10 and this Langdorf one of the greatest bargains we have offered.
