Three Friday Reds

Port Lincoln
South Australia
Shiraz 2013
(Cleanskin-slip label)
Shows promise and on a second taste I feel I more positive than my Wednesday endorsement. The alcohol is 13.8% which shows the Eyre Peninsula is more Margaret River than McLaren Vale.

Still this is not prime grade to rival Goat Square but rather have a case in the pantry, open, drink a few glasses and keep for another day. A good buy at the Glug price yet wines like this can be $25 at a cellar door.

Princeland Watch
Limestone Coast

Shiraz Cabernet 2015

To make these blends work you take the Cabernet from a cooler region and the Shiraz from further inland as herbal flavours so readily build in cool climate Shiraz.

Another superb effort from Benjamin Parker and Greg Liebelt.

The Perfect
Press
McLaren Vale
Grenache 2018 14.5%

Experiments began over 10 years ago, back in 2009, to develop a sappy, tasty red to open after a luncheon white.

A red which has flavour but low to very low extract, resembling say a Yarra Valley Pinot, yet sourced from South Australia with a different mouthfeel to a big Barossa Shiraz. Benjamin settled on McLaren Vale Grenache and this is the fourth release.

Building a brand, building trust, keeping a reputation comes partly from under selling and over delivering and it must be done day and and day out.

Building a brand, building trust, keeping a reputation comes partly from under selling and over delivering and it must be done day and and day out.

When a new wine is released marketing asks for it to over-deliver. This makes sense as the first impression is worth a lot and in my experience there have been occasions when ‘over-delivering’ has been true; eg the release of the first Penfolds Koonunga Hill 1976.

Brand reputation is something very hard to build and even harder to hold onto. In the current revolution with signals coming from all angles, from many sources, it is likely harder.

I give advice, via these four weekly emails, though I’m carful of hyperbole and tend to dampen expectations.
While I can spend wine dollars better than customers I am also aware that any reputation I have built can go ‘poof’ with a few badly chosen wines. The safety factor is to keep prices down for uncertain wines as it is unlikely many customers will grumble about a $6 red.

With that out of the way, may I say I was a bit hard on the Wednesday Special, the Port Lincoln South Australia Shiraz 2013, which is a good wine for the price. Better is the new release of the Princeland Watch from the Limestone Coast and neither will damage my reputation as a wine merchant.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Bengalee
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015
The Bengalee sailed as a temperance ship and upon disembarking in Port Adelaide the new arrivals rushed to the Barossa Valley to plant vines, around Greenock was a favoured place.

To capture this moment Benjamin has placed the ship inside a bottle-please see the label. Oh this wine is good.

Oakley Adams
Langhorne Creek
Shiraz 2016

To find the bargains we look for places with the right climate, low cost of production, and low consumer recognition. Out two top spots in South Australia are Langhorne Creek and the Limestone Coast.

So, I welcome back with pleasure the new bottling of the Oakley Adams Shiraz from a collection of reds Benjamin selected on a recent buying trip.

Cameron Country
'Red Post'
Coonawarra
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Coonawarra should be part of your drinking pattern.

Barossa may be the foundation but interest is retained with the power of cooler climate maritime Cabernet of a type made so famous by Coonawarra.

I see fabulous value for money.

Exploring the Full Favoured Reds of South Australia No.2

The reds of South Australia are very special. The reason is the geography of the premium vineyard regions means the climate is a balance between cooling and ripening in a way which is not found anywhere else on the globe. The bunches of grapes are pulled towards the coolness of the Great Southern Mega Ocean which slows flavour development, which can alter quickly by the intense, inland, heat flowing in from the baking, red centre.

It is this balance, constantly tilting, which makes complex, intense, interesting flavours which are best referred to as warm flavoured reds. Though a grower in Coonawarra may well disagree. Any-way this is the first mix of a wonderful new selection.

Each dozen contains one bottle of the following wines:
Colton & Hewett McLaren Vale Cabernet 2014
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Cameron Country 'Red Post' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Princeland Watch Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Crayford Barossa Valley Cabernedro 2016
Hope Farm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015
Andrina Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2016
Light & Finniss South Australia Adelaidean Dry Red Blend 2012

It's All Barossa Valley - 100% Guaranteed No.5

The Australian press, tourist agencies and P.R. companies all agree that the most popular wine region, the most recognised, is the Barossa Valley. The late, great Chef Joel Rubuchon was famous for his mashed potatoes which contained 25% butter. ‘No one who tasted his recipe, made with 25 per cent butter, could forget the experience’. This reads like a proxy for the Barossa Valley, not just a warm climate red but one exploding with 25% more flavour.

Each dozen contains one bottle of the following wines:
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Bengalee Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
